Leading as if People Matter

We have all known apparently successful businesspeople (and even parents) who thought achievement was merely mechanical, numeric, like an algebra equation:

4X + Y = Success

Set the objectives, lay out the rules and push “on.” Yet when valued employees leave, relationships fail and objectives begin to crumble, the only thing they know to do is to push harder. Having only false or manipulative or unpracticed human-skills, these individuals never will solve for ‘why.'

The best business plan will fail unless it makes ample use of the best people skills. And yet maximizing people “skills” is not the ticket, either. Skills are mechanical; most people aren't. A real leader will endeavor to reach their hearts, inspire their minds, and enlist their true potential as humans. After all, most people are human. And as humans they respond best to human things, not inhuman ones.
